C’è un lato oscuro della festa,tutta quella luce nel cuore dell’inverno è prima di tutto una risposta alle paure più ataviche,più umane.
E’ il segno di una volontà di uno sforzo di venire a capo del buio e del freddo che tiene insieme epoche e culti che precede di molto il cristianesimo e ci riporta a riti pagani che hanno al centro l’ossesione eterna della morte e del tempo.

È il giorno più breve dell’anno e sin dalla notte dei tempi è stato investito di molteplici simbologie. Precisamente dal momento in cui l’uomo iniziò il suo percorso di osservazione e di comprensione dei moti del cielo. Ad esso si associa inoltre il concetto di rinascita dello spirito. Stiamo parlando del solstizio d’inverno. Che cade quel 21 dicembre tanto temuto e ormai entrato nell’immaginario collettivo come la data della fine piuttosto che dell’ inizio.

Il solstizio d’inverno è un momento di passaggio. Cade nel giorno più breve dell’anno, ossia quello in cui le ore di luce sono nettamente inferiori alle ore di buio. Si tratta di un momento di passaggio del Sole attraverso la Porta degli dei, simbolo di una ripartenza spirituale avvenuta dopo la sconfitta del Male. Ma non è tutto. Il solstizio d’inverno simboleggia l’ingresso nella transazione dal buio alla luce, dalla morte alla rinascita, in netta contrapposizione con quello estivo che cade il 24 giugno. E appartiene, sebbene in forme diverse, alla spiritualità di diverse religioni del mondo.

Ed è proprio durante il periodo più buio dell’anno che ogni società aveva bisogno di essere tutelata. E ad essa venivano in soccorso rituali e divinità che potessero tutelarle durante il momento di oscurità. Una sorta di espediente contro inverni troppo freddi e rigidi che avrebbero comportato la perdita di bestiame e la sospensione delle coltivazioni; e, in alcuni casi, la morte per carestia. Era questa la fredda consapevolezza che, a partire dal 21 dicembre, aveva inizio a tutti gli effetti la stagione più gelida dell’anno.
